A variety of quartz with trace elements giving it its distinctive purple colour- other varieties of quartz are citrine, smoky quartz (misleadingly known as smoky topaz), rose quartz and rock crystal. The different colours are caused by various trace elements, and it is possible to have two colours in the same stone. For example amatrine or amarine has purple and yellow in the same crystal, although this may be artificially induced.
